Over the last five years, I have had the great honor to celebrate July 4th, the United States\u2019 Independence Day, throughout the Eastern Caribbean.\u00a0 As an American, I see July 4th as a day to not only appreciate the great ideals and accomplishments of my country, but to also think about how we continue to strive to create \u201ca more perfect union.\u201d\u00a0 This year has been particularly poignant for our union.\u00a0 The onslaught of the pandemic has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives around the world, many of them American.\u00a0 During this challenge, the people of the Caribbean have been with us.\u00a0 Doctors and nurses, people like Safiya Davy, a Vincentian nurse in Washington, DC, or Terry Pascal, a Grenadian healthcare worker in New York City, join thousands on the front lines.\u00a0 Additionally, in recent weeks, the people of the United States, and around the world, have demanded accountability and action to address racial injustice.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>There too we have felt the support of <\/span><\/span>our <\/span><\/span>Caribbean brothers and sisters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

I spent the July <\/span><\/span>4th\u2019s<\/span><\/span> of my youth in Upstate New York, where I grew up.\u00a0 The region has a long association with abolitionist and equality movements.\u00a0 As the United States celebrates this year the 100th anniversary of women\u2019s right to vote, we remember the first women\u2019s rights convention in the United States at Seneca Falls, New York in 1848.\u00a0 The declaration that came out of the meeting was modeled on the Declaration of Independence and pledged to \u201cuse every instrumentality within our power\u201d to fight for the enfranchisement of half of America\u2019s population. \u00a0Most of the participants were women.\u00a0 The only African-American was a man, Frederick Douglass, the author, orator, and former slave, whose commitment to the equality of black Americans was <\/span><\/span>as <\/span><\/span>fervently matched by his fight for the rights of women, Native Americans, and immigrants.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

For Douglass, for me, and for millions around the world, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution reflected <\/span><\/span>the ideals upon which our country was founded. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>Our nation was<\/span><\/span> not buil<\/span><\/span>t<\/span><\/span> on shared <\/span><\/span>history, <\/span><\/span>ethnicity, or language, but on the pursuit of freedom and the wellbeing of our families and communities.\u00a0 These ideals are what inspired the suffragettes at Seneca Falls, the abolitionists of New York, and conductors along the Underground Railroad<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>who guided escaped slaves through the towns and cities I would later call home. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\n

All these patriots <\/span><\/span>agreed <\/span><\/span>that <\/span><\/span>uphold<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> and liv<\/span><\/span>ing <\/span><\/span>up to our nation’s ideals require<\/span><\/span>d constant dedication and <\/span><\/span>civic engagement<\/span><\/span>. \u00a0<\/span><\/span>Our commitment to <\/span><\/span>free speech and full civic participation is one of the values that unites us with <\/span><\/span>Antigua and Barbuda<\/span><\/span> and the nations of the Eastern Caribbean.<\/span><\/span> \u00a0Unlike authoritarian regimes, we <\/span><\/span>are convinced <\/span><\/span>that our countries are <\/span><\/span>stronger and more just when our citizens participate and engage in the “free market of ideas.”\u00a0 We don’t\u00a0silence critics. \u00a0We embrace diverse ideas and invite them to challenge ours. \u00a0Douglass was clear on this when he wrote, \u201cTo suppress free speech is a double wrong. \u00a0It violates the rights of the hearer as well as those of the speaker.\u201d \u00a0 Save for the tragic <\/span><\/span>suppression<\/span><\/span> of democracy in Cuba and Venezuela, our <\/span><\/span>hemisphere <\/span><\/span>is one committed to values <\/span><\/span>of democrac<\/span><\/span>y <\/span><\/span>public accountability and respect for our citizens’ votes and opinions. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>

In June, “National Caribbean American Heritage Month,” we celebrated these shared values and the legacies and contributions of the Caribbean region\u2019s sons and daughters. \u00a0Modern day pioneers include academics like Dr. Cardinal <\/span><\/span>Warde<\/span><\/span>, a professor of electrical engineering at <\/span><\/span>the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<\/span><\/span>MIT<\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>, born in Barbados, who conducts STEM programs for students throughout the region. \u00a0They include star athletes like <\/span><\/span>Adonal<\/span><\/span> Foyle from St. Vincent, who played with the NBA Golden State Warriors and continues to inspire Caribbean youth. \u00a0Entrepreneurs include Michelle Samuel, who after returning from an exchange program in the United States, began hosting virtual \u201c<\/span><\/span>DreamBuilder<\/span><\/span>\u201d business sessions for women across St. Lucia. \u00a0From science, to sports, to business, the people of the Caribbean continue to shape our history and contribute to our shared future. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The <\/span><\/span>founding ideals<\/span><\/span> of the United States of <\/span><\/span>America<\/span><\/span>ha<\/span><\/span>ve <\/span><\/span>been advanced by every <\/span><\/span>subsequent <\/span><\/span>generation. \u00a0In celebration of United States Independence Day, we take <\/span><\/span>on this challenge and sum our voices in pledging to honor, uphold, and expand the ideals of equality and freedom for all embe<\/span><\/span>dded in the American republic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
