The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is now among a list of the world\u2019s top 100 Universities in new rankings released by <\/span>Times Higher Education (THE). <\/span><\/p>

\n

On June 24, <\/span>THE<\/span> revealed its <\/span>\u2018<\/span>Golden Age University Rankings<\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/a>of<\/span> established higher education institutions across the world that have been around for <\/span>50 to 80<\/span> years. <\/span>Based<\/span> on years of existence, <\/span>this category <\/span>compare<\/span>s<\/span> institutions<\/span> established between 1945 and 1967<\/span>,<\/span> using the same <\/span>criteria and methodology as the World Rankings<\/span>.<\/span><\/a> According to <\/span>THE,<\/span> \u201cthe ranking takes its name from what was a <\/span>\u2018<\/span>Golden Age<\/span>\u2019<\/span> in global higher education, characterised by rapid university expansion and increasing investment in research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

These results reinforce that in spite of being a relatively young institution, <\/span>and having limited access to financial and development resources, <\/span>i<\/span>n just over <\/span>70 years<\/span> The UWI <\/span>has <\/span>successfully <\/span>built a solid reputation as the higher education leader. <\/span>Recently<\/span> during the annual report presentation to <\/span>its U<\/span>niversity Council, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles noted that <\/span>the <\/span>academy is among the best in the world and its reputation has never been higher. This latest <\/span>t<\/span>op 100 <\/span>\u2018<\/span>Golden Age<\/span>\u2019<\/span> ranking <\/span>performance affirms The UWI\u2019s prestige and leadership as it is now a familiar and consistent name in the <\/span>Times Higher Education\u2019s<\/span> r<\/span>ankings, yet remains the sole Carib<\/span><\/a>bean university on all the lists.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reacting to the news, Vice-Chancellor Beckles said<\/span>, \u201c<\/span>Our<\/span>astounding performance in yet another ranking table <\/span>beseeches<\/span> the question, again\u2014how does The UWI maintain its elite ranking located as it is<\/span>,<\/span> in an economy that has not seen sustained economic growth in 30 years? The answer is\u2014our deep stakeholder commitment, focused leadership, and the power of d<\/span>edicated, unwavering colleagues. It is no secret that for the greater part of its existence, <\/span>The UWI has had to function with a significant measure of deficit financing as we deliver this public <\/span>good, which<\/span> is time and time again rated as world-class<\/span> by international ranking standards<\/span>. As we continue skilfully managing, we look forward to <\/span>the roll out <\/span>of a new financial model that will<\/span> see the University soaring to even higher heights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Vice-Chancellor Beckles set out on a strategic path, five years ago, to globally<\/span> transform The UWI\u2019s reputation<\/span> before going to markets to raise revenue. \u201cWe are now at this juncture,\u201d he said, \u201cand we are pleased with the outcomes to date.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

Back in <\/span>April, The<\/span> UWI also <\/span>appeared on<\/span> THE\u2019s<\/span> Impact Rankings 2020<\/span><\/a> which map<\/span>s<\/span> how universities are responding<\/span> to the<\/span> world\u2019s biggest concerns<\/span>,<\/span> outlined in the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). <\/span>This is<\/span> the <\/span>only global performance table<\/span> that assess<\/span>es<\/span> universities on their research, outreach and stewardship of the SDGs. Of the 768 universities from 85 countries<\/span> on the table<\/span>, The UWI ranked among the top 200 for its work on SDG3: Good Health and Wellbeing; SDG5: Gender Equality and SDG13: Climate Action.<\/span><\/p>\n

The UWI\u2019s Office of Global Partnerships and Sustainable Futures works to strengthen the regional university\u2019s positioning and engagement with the 2030 global development agenda. Commenting on the Impact Rankings, t<\/span>he Office\u2019s Director, Dr<\/span>Stacy Richards-Kennedy asserted, <\/span>\u201cThis international <\/span>recognition of The UWI\u2019s contribution to advancing the 2030 agenda for sustainable development is a tribute to the hard work of our staff and students from various Faculties and Research Centres and Institutes across our five Campuses.\u00a0 Since the 2015 commitment of UN member states to the SDGs, The UWI has championed the central role of universities to national and regional engagement in the global development agenda through teaching, research, advocacy and partnerships, while at the same time serving as \u2018living labs\u2019 for sustainable institutional practices.\u00a0 During this UN-declared Decade of Action, The UWI will continue to intensify its efforts at leveraging its inter-disciplinary research and scientific expertise on the unique issues faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), to address the multi-dimensional development challenges facing the Caribbean.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

This <\/span>Impact Rankings recognition<\/span> further <\/span>endorses The UWI\u2019s advocacy on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/span> In January 2019, the International Association of Universities (IAU) selected The UWI as a global leader in the mobilisation of higher education and research institutions for sustainable development. <\/span>The<\/span> IAU designated The UWI as the lead institution for a Global University Consortium on SDG 13 in recognition of <\/span>its<\/span> research contributions on climate change and sustainable development.<\/span> The UWI\u2019s work on SDG5 earned the spotlight i<\/span>n 2018, <\/span>when the University<\/span> launched a<\/span> Gender Policy to formalise its commitment to gender justice and establish a framework for its implementation<\/span>. The Policy serves as a blueprint to incorporate the issues of gender and development and to express the fundamental principles that are deemed vital to sustainable growth and development throughout the Caribbean.<\/span> The UWI also score<\/span>d<\/span>highly on <\/span>SDG3 <\/span>which <\/span>measures universities\u2019 research on key diseases and conditions, their support for healthcare professions, and the health of students and staff<\/span>. <\/span>Its<\/span> strength in this area<\/span> was <\/span>demonstrated and reinforced<\/span> over the past few months i<\/span>n<\/span> its leadership through<\/span> science and medicine in the Caribbean region\u2019s fight against the COVID-<\/span>19 pandemic, <\/span>described by Vice-Chancellor Beckles as \u201cThe UWI\u2019s finest hour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
