Antigua and Barbuda is currently experiencing a prolonged period of drought
\nwhich is not only affecting the people of the country, but the agriculture sector as
\nwell, specifically the livestock industry.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Livestock farmers would normally depend on the wild growth of certain grass
\nspecies to feed their animals but with little or no rain which is restricting the
\ngrowth of said feed, farmers are sometimes forced to spend large sums of money
\nto buy feed for their animals.<\/p>\n

However, a collaborative project is now underway with the Australian High
\nCommission Direct Aid Programme, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Inter-
\nAmerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the Caribbean
\nResearch and Development Institute (CARDI), to help ease the strain being
\nexperienced by livestock farmers, by providing drought tolerant forages for
\nlivestock animals.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

The primary beneficiaries of this project will be the National Livestock Association
\nand in turn, they will aid members in establishing plots similar to the ones, which
\nare currently being done.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The project includes planting of variety forages at four (4) different locations
\nwhich include; Livestock Station at Paynters, BBC in Seaview Farm, Glanvilles and
\nthe Cades Bay area.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, planting of the forages was well underway at the Livestock
\nStation in Paynters to include 55 Mulberry Plants, 55 Gliricidia, 65 Dwarf Elephant
\nGrass, 150 Chrysopogan and 180 African Starr Grass.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

The plot was divided into four (4) equal parts and the forages were planted ten
\n(10) feet apart.<\/p>\n

CARDI Technician Mr. Bradbury Browne, explained that to support the project in
\nthe extreme dry conditions, the team had to design a simple irrigation system to
\nmaintain the forages.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Such a system is very crucial especially since the forages have just been
\ntransplanted and have to be watered daily until they are fully established and
\nthere is new growth.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

When new growth occurs, the irrigation cycle will be adjusted to every other day.<\/p>\n

This is highly dependent on the weather conditions; once there is steady rainfall,
\nthe system will be activated once a week.<\/p>\n

National Specialist for IICA, Mr. Craig Thomas thinks that collaboration on this
\nproject is very important as it allows agencies to work together to provide limited
\nresources to livestock farmers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe partnership between CARDI and IICA\u2019 this is all about managing limited
\nresources and you would have seen what we would have done here today
\nbecause of collaboration,\u201d stated Mr. Thomas.<\/p>\n

The provision of the nutritious drought tolerant forages will help farmers to
\nsecure feed for animals before, during and after the drought season by
\nestablishing similar plots livestock farms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ultimate objective is for farmers in Antigua and Barbuda to come to Paynters
\nand the other plots to get planting material so that they can establish plots similar
\nto what we have here,\u201d stated Mr. Thomas.<\/p>\n

Agriculture Assistant Three (3) at the Experimental Station at Dunbars, Victor
\nHarris, explained how beneficial this project is to the livestock farmers on the
\nisland during this climatic condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe provide demonstration plots for farmers, livestock owners that rare animals
\nlike sheep, cattle, goats, those kinds of animals that utilize forages so that we can
\ntry to bring down as much as possible, the cost of production in buying grain and
\nthese kinds of supplemental feed,\u201d stated Mr. Harris.<\/p>\n

Livestock Division Officer, Tadius Spencer explains that not only will these forages
\nlower the cost of production for livestock farmers, but also, due to the highly
\nnutritious content of the feed, farmers can expect to see a change in what they
\nget from their animals.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey will be real good food for the animals, you can get some real good
\nproduction, if you are into meat then you can get a real good size or if it is milk
\nyou will get good nutritious milk from the animals,\u201d stated Mr. Spencer.<\/p>\n

A similar exercise will be carried out at the plot in Glanville\u2019s to be followed by
\nCades Bay.<\/p>\n
