Management of the Antigua Barbuda Emergency Medical Services is refuting claims of a Letter to the Editor published on Antigua Newsroom which claims that the institution has a shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).<\/p>

The article entitled \u201cEMT\u2019s Cry Out For Personal Protective Equipment\u201d <\/strong>which was published on May 30th<\/sup> 2020 professes EMS is facing challenges in the absence of having proper PPE\u2019s.<\/p>\n

However, EMS Spokesperson Morvin Fiedtkou who is also responsible for requesting supplies from the Central Store within the Ministry has strongly refuted the claims.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Fiedtkou revealed that \u201cEMS\u2019s store room which currently has a stock of 2000 PPE\u2019s inclusive of masks, gowns and gloves has always had an adequate supply of the equipment for staff since their protection is of paramount importance.\u201d<\/p>

He indicated that a system has been put in place to properly manage the stock effectively.<\/p>\n

According to Fiedtkou, \u201cone PPE is used for the 8 hour work day unless the case arises where a patient exhibits covid-19 symptoms, for example a cough, at which point the Emergency Medical Technician is then provided with another PPE to minimize the risk of transmission.\u201d<\/p>

In addition, a surveillance team has been put in place to screen calls to determine whether the patient is at a low risk or high risk of having Covid-19.\u00a0 If the call is low risk, the regular EMT\u2019s will go on that call however if the call is deemed to be high risk, the Infectious Control Unit will respond with the appropriate PPE.<\/p>\n
