The coronavirus \u201cmay never go away\u201d, the World Health Organization (WHO) has warned.<\/strong><\/p>

Speaking at a briefing on Wednesday, WHO emergencies director Dr Mike Ryan warned against trying to predict when the virus would disappear.<\/p>\n

He added that even if a vaccine is found, controlling the virus will require a \u201cmassive effort\u201d.<\/p>\n

Almost 300,000 people worldwide are reported to have died with coronavirus, and more than 4.3m cases recorded.<\/p>

\"\"<\/div>\n

The UN meanwhile warned the pandemic was causing widespread distress and mental ill health \u2013 particularly in countries where there\u2019s a lack of investment in mental healthcare.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

The UN urged governments to make mental health considerations part of their overall response.<\/p>\n

What did WHO say?<\/h2>\n

\u201cIt is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away,\u201d Dr Ryan told the virtual press conference from Geneva.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

\u201cHIV has not gone away \u2013 but we have come to terms with the virus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Ryan then said he doesn\u2019t believe \u201canyone can predict when this disease will disappear\u201d.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

There are currently\u00a0more than 100 potential vaccines\u00a0in development \u2013 but Dr Ryan noted there are other illnesses, such as measles, that still haven\u2019t been eliminated despite there being vaccines for them.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed it was still possible to control the virus, with effort.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe trajectory is in our hands, and it\u2019s everybody\u2019s business, and we should all contribute to stop this pandemic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove also told the briefing: \u201cWe need to get into the mindset that it is going to take some time to come out of this pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their stark remarks come as several countries began to gradually ease lockdown measures, and leaders consider the issue of how and when to reopen their economies.<\/p>\n

Dr Tedros warned that there was no guaranteed way of easing restrictions without triggering a second wave of infections.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany countries would like to get out of the different measures,\u201d the WHO boss said. \u201cBut our recommendation is still the alert at any country should be at the highest level possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr Ryan added: \u201cThere is some magical thinking going on that lockdowns work perfectly and that unlocking lockdowns will go great. Both are fraught with dangers.\u201d<\/p>\n
