\u00a0<\/strong>A former Minister of Foreign Affairs who also served as President of the Senate, Emmanuel Neville Cenac, has been appointed as St. Lucia\u2019s new Governor General.<\/p>

On Thursday, Prime Minister\u00a0Allen Chastanet has announced that Queen Elizabeth II approved the appointment effective January 1.<\/u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n

Cenac is a former elected Member of Parliament\u00a0for the constituency of Laborie, was intricately involved in the movement for Windward Island unity.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>
\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cenac, an elder statesman, highly respected in the legal fraternity, retired from active political service in 2006 and has since written extensively on the Constitution of St Lucia\u00a0.<\/u><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

In making the announcement, Prime Minister Chastanet profusely thanked former Governor General Dame PearletteLouisy for her service.<\/p>\n

\u201cDame Pearlette will always remain an icon in our country as the first woman to hold this office and the longest serving Governor General,\u201d\u00a0the Prime Minister said.<\/u><\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

<\/u>\u201cShe is also one of our country\u2019s leading educators having served at varying levels in the noble profession of teaching. I know that Dame Pearlette will continue to make a contribution to the development of our country.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

<\/u>In order to facilitate the transition, the Government had been in dialogue with Dame Pearlette, who marked her 20 year anniversary as Governor General in September 2017 with a calendar of activities in tribute.<\/u><\/u><\/p>

<\/u>\u201cWe will always love Dame PearletteLouisy,\u201d added the Prime Minister.\u201cShe has served this country exceptionally and on behalf of the People of Saint Lucia and the Government I say an immense thank you to Her Excellency Dame Pearlette for her grace and her counsel.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/p>
