With the Pandemic<\/span><\/span> more than likely to <\/span><\/span>affect <\/span><\/span>or is affecting <\/span><\/span>trade betwee<\/span><\/span>n <\/span><\/span>countries in one way or the other, \u00a0many nations are being forced <\/span><\/span>to rely<\/span><\/span> more<\/span><\/span>heavily on <\/span><\/span>the Agriculture industry for food such as <\/span><\/span>loc<\/span><\/span>al fruits<\/span><\/span>, veget<\/span><\/span>ables and meat products<\/span><\/span>.

\n<\/span><\/span>\u200bOne of Antigua and <\/span><\/span>Barbuda\u2019s <\/span><\/span>key partners in<\/span><\/span> the agri<\/span><\/span>culture sector<\/span><\/span> is<\/span><\/span> the <\/span><\/span>Caribbean Agricultural Research and<\/span><\/span> Development Institute (CARDI)<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> which <\/span><\/span>is responsible for seed production in Anti<\/span><\/span>gua and Barbuda <\/span><\/span>and Montserrat<\/span><\/span> to aid in<\/span><\/span> food and nutrition security<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span><\/span>organization<\/span><\/span> said that it<\/span><\/span> h<\/span><\/span>as<\/span><\/span> already<\/span><\/span> begun to take<\/span><\/span> the<\/span><\/span> necessary <\/span><\/span>steps<\/span><\/span> to rapidly increase seed production a<\/span><\/span>nd crop production for both individuals<\/span><\/span>and livestock at a time like this.<\/span><\/span>

CARDI <\/span><\/span>promote<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> seed quality testing and management <\/span><\/span>of several crops, which include<\/span><\/span> hot peppers, local pumpkin, local table squash and corn. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

The seeds in production are all carefully selected an<\/span><\/span>d maintained in their seed bank. \u00a0T<\/span><\/span>hese <\/span><\/span>include<\/span><\/span>yellow Scotch Bonnet, Moruga Red<\/span><\/span>, Corn<\/span><\/span>, Pumpkin and Table Squash. <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>\u200bIn terms <\/span><\/span>of planting material, <\/span><\/span>sw<\/span><\/span>eet potato and cassavas are available.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The CARD<\/span><\/span>I facility here in Antigua comprises<\/span><\/span> a humidity bin where they have prepared 350 cuttings using 2 & 3 node method of rapid multiplication. <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>\u200bSince the pandemic has occurred a<\/span><\/span>nd spread to the Caribbean, CARDI announced that it has<\/span><\/span> planted corn on 0.25 acres for further seed production. <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>\u200bNot only is CARDI<\/span><\/span> catering for persons, but they are also producing feed for the livestock<\/span><\/span> industry so that the <\/span><\/span>animals are well feed and not sho<\/span><\/span>rt on food with the high demand<\/span><\/span> which will be presented for local produce. <\/span><\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span>\u200b S<\/span><\/span>everal drought tolerant grasses and legumes <\/span><\/span>have <\/span><\/span>already <\/span><\/span>been <\/span><\/span>established for these animals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

In add<\/span><\/span>ition, Mulberry and Mo<\/span><\/span>ringa plots<\/span><\/span> have also been developed<\/span><\/span> to support alternative feed mixes for livestock farmers. <\/span><\/span>

\n<\/span><\/span>\u200bThe unit continues to support livestock farmers and provide planting <\/span><\/span>materi<\/span><\/span>al. T<\/span><\/span>hus <\/span><\/span>far,<\/span><\/span> they have engaged<\/span><\/span> over 50 livestock <\/span><\/span>fa<\/span><\/span>rmers in Antigua and Barbuda U<\/span><\/span>nder the project \u201cDeveloping Sustainable Protein Sources for Community <\/span><\/span>Nutrition Resilience in Antigua.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The project, <\/span><\/span>which<\/span><\/span> is a collaborative effort<\/span><\/span>between the Ministry of Agricu<\/span><\/span>lture,<\/span><\/span> (CARDI)<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>Inter-America Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA) and the Australian High Commission Direct<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>give<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> livestock farmers a chance to have adequate nutritious feed for their animals, which will aid in the efficient production of meat in Antigua and Barbuda.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
