Some members of the opposition Barbuda People’s Movement (BPM) and the main opposition\u00a0United Progressive Party (UPP) are protesting amendments to the Barbuda Land Act.<\/p>

They are demonstrating outside an ongoing session of Parliament where it is expected\u00a0that amendments will be tabled.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said some provisions of the act are unconstitutional and his government intends to change those provisions.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

Browne says among the changes to be made is to give Barbudans an option to purchase\u00a0land on the sister isle while maintaining the communal landholding for those who choose to do so.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

BPM leader Trevor Walker called the pending changes to the act “outrageous and insensitive.”<\/p>\n

He says the government has not consulted Barbudans on the possible changes.<\/p>

\"\"<\/a><\/div>\n

“As far as I am concerned the international community must confirm now that the Prime Minister and his government (are) after a land grab in Barbuda,” Walker said.<\/p>\n

A small protest is also underway in Barbuda outside the Council offices.<\/p>
