Hundreds of farmers in Antigua and Barbuda are set to receive vital agricultural support through a large-scale fertilizer distribution drive spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Lands, and the Blue Economy.

The government secured more than 1,750 bags of fertilizer for the exercise, which was launched on Tuesday, with donations from the Kingdom of Morocco.

Officials say the programme is part of ongoing efforts to boost agricultural productivity and strengthen food security across the twin-island state.

Anthony Smith, a senior official in the ministry, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to equipping farmers with essential resources. “This is another strong step toward strengthening our agricultural sector and ensuring food security,” he noted.

Farmers have until 8 September to collect their supplies, with ministry officials encouraging full participation to help sustain local food production.

Agriculture authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of increasing domestic crop yields, especially in light of rising global food prices and supply chain challenges.

The ministry has pledged to continue supporting farmers through technical training, improved infrastructure, and access to inputs.

The partnership with Morocco marks the latest in a series of international collaborations aimed at bolstering Antigua and Barbuda’s agricultural resilience

  1. These chemicals are destroying the soil and over time the soil will not produce.

The scientific studies are there to prove that these chemicals are dangerous when introduced to ground water.

Why not establish a national compost plant and redirect green matter from the dump that farmers can utilize to nourish their fields.
These quick fixes have deadly consequences.

  2. The chemicals have a lot of farmers and people who consume the vegetable derive from this chemical coming down with cancer, then the soil stop yielding unless you buy Monsanto GMO seeds, freebs not good, it has been institutionalized in our people from colonialism.

  3. @Melchisidec – You are right. Unfortunately, organic farming is difficult to do at scale, even though it yields better long-term results.

@Eldread – Cancer itself is nothing new. What has changed is the lack of necessary inputs our body needs to fight it, along with toxic chemicals, radiation, pollution and lifestyle. These fertilizers focus on supplying the big three – Nitrogen Phosphorus and Potassium, but the micronutrients – boron, manganese, magnesium, calcium, iron, etc. are all things our bodies need to stay healthy. Why do you think the supermarket goods spoil in your fridge, while an organic cucumber can stay on the counter for months?

  4. The King Judas and the Money-Hawk are doing everything in their power to appease the eletorate of All Saints West. The deception is glaring and you, King Judas, will meet the same fate as the Post Office Judas from St. Mary’s South.

  5. This will not prevent this Traitor (judas) from getting his Ars whipped at the Ballot Box. You can pave all roads in Gold the people Of ASW will reject you and the ABLP .Never eill we forget.
