Anguilla reeling from shooting incidents, teen’s death confirmed

Loop News – The Governor’s Office of Anguilla in a statement this morning has expressed shock over the series of shootings over the last 24 hours and has confirmed news of the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy.

The Governor’s Office says its thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the young boy.

The office stated: “It is hard to imagine the pain they are going through at this time. We stand with them in their grief. 

As a community, we need to respond to this terrible event by doing everything possible to bring those responsible to justice and tackle the scourge of gun crime in our community. I am in close contact with the RAPF who are working hard to identify and arrest those responsible.” 

Acting Premier of Anguilla Haydn Hughes will make an address to the nation following the series of firearm-related incidents this week.

On Thursday, a male student of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School (ALHCS) was injured during a shooting incident at the James Ronald Webster Park around 12 pm.

The student was taken to hospital for treatment.

The Royal Anguilla Police Force announced this morning that due to ongoing inquiries; the James Ronald Webster Park is closed to the general public until further notice.

The Government of Anguilla notes the Police Force continues its investigations into the shooting incident that occurred on October 5, and additional details on this disturbing incident are incoming.

Meanwhile, in the second shooting incident which occurred on Wednesday, October 4, a security worker attached to the Anguilla Air and Sea Ports Authority (AASPA) sustained gunshot wounds to the arm following a shooting incident in the vicinity of Blowing Point Ferry Terminal around 6 pm.

A statement says the officer was able to make his way back to the terminal building where colleagues enabled active shooter protocols, securing the port and containing the situation until emergency response personnel arrived. The matter is under investigation.

Meanwhile, it was announced that the following measures will be taken to further enhance the safety of staff and passengers traversing the Blowing Point Ferry:

  • Armed and K9 Security until the end of 2023 in the first instance

  • Installation of further additional solar-powered flood lights around the terminal building

  • Installation of four additional streetlights to improve the general lighting around the port

  • Police presence during the afternoon until the closure of the port

  • Counselling for staff infected by the incident.

In a third shooting incident, police said on Wednesday around 2:30 pm in South Hill, a firearm was discharged where, fortunately, no injuries were sustained.
