Each year, the World’s Toughest Row challenges adventurers to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, pushing their physical and mental limits. Starting in San Sebastian de la Gomera, Canary Islands, and ending at Antigua’s Nelson’s Dockyard, participants face over a month of relentless exertion, extreme weather, and isolation.

Rowers burn more than 5,000 calories daily, taking over 1.5 million strokes while enduring sleep deprivation and psychological stress. These extreme conditions offer a unique opportunity for researchers at the American University of Antigua (AUA) to study the human body’s adaptations during such prolonged stress.

AUA’s College of Medicine recently collaborated on a study published in Cureus, exploring how rowers’ brainwaves and metabolic processes shift under pressure. Findings show the brain reallocates energy during acute stress to prioritize survival, shedding light on the body’s fight-or-flight response. Researchers believe these insights can advance understanding of energy conservation, performance, and stress management in both athletic and everyday contexts.

AUA students and faculty use this research to contribute to global knowledge while leveraging Antigua’s role as the race’s finish line. Such projects highlight the university’s commitment to impactful, real-world discovery.
