The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has confirmed that the Chantel Alert system, designed to assist in cases of missing children, is not yet operational—prompting fresh concerns over child safety and the pace of implementation.
The update came during Thursday’s post-Cabinet media briefing, where Chief of Staff Ambassador Lionel Hurst said the system is still awaiting a few key components, including equipment and personnel training. While he assured the public that the framework is in place, a specific launch date was not provided.
“All the parts have been put together—we just haven’t yet turned on the engine, as it were,” Hurst explained. “The Chantel Alert is going to be operational within a short period.”
The system, announced in response to public outcry over child disappearances, aims to provide rapid alerts across media and mobile platforms when a child is reported missing under suspicious circumstances. The Cabinet has repeatedly described the initiative as a critical step forward in improving child protection.
Despite those assurances, the delay in activating the system has raised concerns among citizens and advocacy groups, especially in light of recent incidents involving vulnerable children.
Government officials say the Minister responsible for technology remains committed to launching the alert system soon, and preparations are near completion.
However, the lack of a firm timeline continues to draw public attention. With each passing week, questions grow louder about whether the infrastructure and political will are aligned to bring the Chantel Alert fully online.
The Cabinet has promised to notify the public once the system is activated.

As i always say, this shoulda been done since Chantel went missing. It too late for her, but at least other children might be protected now.
