Air Peace’s $14m stranded with CBN, 15 planes grounded abroad — Onyema

He also disclosed that the airline has about $14 million stranded with the Central Bank Nigeria and about 15 aircraft stranded abroad.

Onyema made these statements in an address he delivered on August 28, 2023, at the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held in Abuja.

He said Nigerian airlines do not lack capacity; but a truthful government, support and ease of doing business.

The Air Peace boss went on to recount how he applied to run a maintenance hangar in 2015 after paying over 100 million naira to FAAN to lease land at the Lagos Airport but added that Air Peace is yet to get the land even eight years after.

Urges government action

He said: “As I speak to you, we are yet to get that land.

We are the largest carrier in West and Central Africa and the fastest growing airline in Africa.

Yet we do not have a maintenance hangar.

Not because we do not have funds to build one. If we had been given the land to build the hangar, by now, Nigeria will have an MRO they will be proud of, and this will attract foreign investments because other countries will come here to maintain their aircraft”.

Onyema said the ease of doing business in Nigeria is low as local investors face a lot of statutory bottlenecks which stifle their growth.

In his words: “We are not serious in this country about encouraging indigenous investments.

How do you grow your economy when local investors are being treated with levity and envy by their own ministers?

“How do you grow your economy when indigenous investments are overtaxed? These same investors are providing jobs for the populace.

How do you grow your economy when people in government see you as an enemy, a rival, because they are beclouded by whatever sentiments they believe in, thereby making business difficult.”

Onyema, who noted that the Nigerian economy is low-ebbed, said with political will, significant progress can be made, while urging Nigerians to give this current government time and benefit of doubt.

“They(government) inherited a massive governance burden, and the government needs forthrightness, sincerity of purpose, and a radical political will.

“The government must be decisive enough to confront the entrenched vested interests in the polity. It must do everything to dismantle those interests.

Public servants must be statesmen who must be committed to the principles of democratic governance.

If this is not done, we are in for a serious problem.

The government must be ready to adopt a hardline commitment to the principles of democratic governance, even in the face of reactionary pressures arising from the entrenched vested interests.

All hands must be on deck to make this country work”.

He said the practice of ethnic nationalism has slowed Nigeria’s development while also stressing that the country’s ease of doing business is poor.

  1. Sounds like a very desperate situation, similar to YIDA and WISEZ. Right up ABLP’s alley. It now makes sense. This is the airline that will save LIAT, even the world!

  2. … And our government is doing business with Air Peace with 15 grounded planes in other countries, and financial issues with Centra Bank of Nigeria 🇳🇬 with $14 million stranded – what does that even mean? Stranded money????

Again, where is the due diligence from this PM and his government?

Gaston Browne’s stubbornness is not only wrecking the country, but turning us into a laughing stock atound the world.

    PLEASE GO NOW PRIME MINISTER!

Isn’t there anyone else CAPABLE in the ABLP of running the party until the next General Election?

LAWD AH MERCY, CAN IT GET ANY WORSE?

  3. @Brix take the dick out of your mouth so we can heat you clearly ..because u want o be in every pepperpot without having the facts… u are such a sad case … idiot

  4. Does the words of the Allen Onyema, the chairman of Air Peace sounds familiar?

Given Me. Onyena student words towards his government, I hope he is doing his home work otherwise he is jumping from the frying pan into the fire

Given Me. Onyena expresses himself stridently towards his government, so I hope he is doing his home work regarding doing business with Antigua, otherwise he is jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

    Sounds just like Antigua

  5. 1 usd is 777 naira. Unless he means usd, that $14 million naira is $18k usd. Am I missing anything? Either way, those money can’t even buy a piece of land in Antigua. Ablp or upp, doesn’t matter, government is continuous, we just need sensible people and ablp ain’t too sensible at the moment.

  6. “We are not serious in this country about encouraging indigenous investments.” AND “How do you grow your economy when local investors are being treated with levity and envy by their own ministers?”

What’s the difference between there and Antigua? Even our own Prime Minister decided to start competing with local farmers just the other year and, this week, decided to take a gas station from a local who has been successful for 40 years.

  7. It is sad to see such a lack of understanding of a simple part of a larger speech.
All I can say to Mr. Onyema, Antigua and Barbuda are very welcoming of your investments. If by any change some of these plans can be executed in Antigua and Barbuda, we will work with you to see how we can make it work. Perhaps we need to start thinking of a second airport specifically to repair and maintain larger aircrafts.

    • @From the Sideline
Did Mr. Onyema say how his investment would benefit Antigua. I must have missed that part. I heard him talking about making money for his country. Our Prime Minister is always eager to deal with foreign investors for our lands. And by the way, who now owns all the lands in Willoughby Bay?

      • The problem with people like you, is that you have no vision and cannot think outside the box. No, he never said anything about Antigua and Barbuda. He was addressing a business forum in his own country and complained about the lack of government support for his company. But as a person thinking outside the box, nothing to do with Gaston Browne, I can see that such investments would put Antigua and Barbuda on the map. Just imagine we are creating a completely new industry in the Caribbean where certain aircraft can come for maintenance. This means lots of our young people will have to be trained. We already have the LIAT maintenance hangar here in Antigua and Barbuda. That is why we have the Head Quarters here. Perhaps it is a start for the land on runway ten to be repurposed and larger hangars be built. Do you know what happens today when any of the major planes have technical difficulties? They have to send a mechanic on a private jet to come and fix the problem. American Airlines does have some local mechanics addressing the small issues. But when it comes to major issues the airline would be grounded until help comes from North America or Canada. This could become a thing of the past if Air Peace opens a maintenance hangar here. And do you know we have the same thing in our yachting sector? Anyway, we can go on and on tackling these things by Industry. Thinking of the Hospital with all their technical equipment, the printeries and the APUA electricity plant. Try using your brain for positive things and not just to hate Gaston Browne and what he is doing.

      • Two thumps up. Mains you are able to think for yourself and think outside the box. Keep using that brain.

  8. @Brixtonian,never mind that foul-mouthed @Curious. The facts stars him the face and he accuses you of not knowing the facts. Just like the puppet acting DPP who was given irrefutable evidence of Gaston Browne admitting to breaking the law and asked for evidence . What a twilight zone Antigua is! We have to get rid of that idiot Dawg or our country is doomed. Not a lot more we can take of the lunatic.

  9. Your Porkston Browne continues to enrich herself and at the end of her political or more like dicktator career, she will take her riches and live a rich life. That all thanks to her loyal voters. The same voters who will continue struggling to get a piece of bread and cheese on the table for their families.

Your Porkston Browne thanks all her slaves and ass kissers on this forum. Keep on voting her in.
