AI Legislation Praised by Senator Kiz Johnson During Budget Debate

Independent Senator Kiz Johnson has expressed strong support for the government’s plans to introduce legislation regulating artificial intelligence (AI), calling the move both necessary and forward-thinking.

“The government’s decision to table AI legislation sooner rather than later is commendable,” Senator Johnson said during the 2025 budget debate. “While AI enhances productivity and innovation, it also carries risks that must be addressed to protect citizens from potential abuse.”

Citing her experience at the United Nations General Assembly Women’s Forum in September, where she represented Antigua and Barbuda, Senator Johnson highlighted the dangers of AI misuse. She shared the story of a female parliamentarian from Montenegro whose reputation was damaged by a deepfake video during an election campaign.

“This is not a distant issue—it is a reality we must prepare for,” she warned.

Senator Johnson emphasised that safeguarding citizens against AI-generated threats, such as online harassment and misinformation, should be a priority. “With every technological advancement comes responsibility. Regulating AI ensures we protect citizens while leveraging the technology’s immense potential to improve lives,” she said.

The senator also connected the proposed AI legislation to the government’s broader focus for 2025, which centres on creating a resilient and prosperous nation.

She urged lawmakers to ensure that the legislation addresses key concerns, including ethical standards, privacy protections, and mechanisms to combat misuse.

“The opportunities are vast, but the risks are real. We must act decisively to stay ahead in the digital age,” she concluded.
