St John’s, Antigua — June 18, 2025
With final preparations underway, the University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus is highlighting the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) in transforming Caribbean society ahead of its second annual AI conference.
A key focus this year is AI in healthcare. Under the theme AI for Sustainable Caribbean Healthcare, a panel of experts will examine how AI is reshaping medical services across the region.
Dr Curtis Charles, Director of Academic Affairs, described it as one of the most impactful sessions of the conference.
Moderated by Dr George Mansour, the panel will feature Harvard Assistant Professor and Chief Data Scientist Dr Michael Lee, whose research centres on applying AI to regional healthcare systems.
Organisers say the session will outline practical, data-driven solutions tailored to the Caribbean context.
More than 300 delegates are expected to attend the conference, which runs from 22 to 24 June.
Support has come from across the public and private sectors, including government ministries, banks and statutory bodies.
The event opens on 22 June with a free workshop for teachers and public servants, aimed at making AI more accessible in classrooms and public services.
A formal welcome reception follows that evening at Hodges Bay.
Registration remains open at fiveislandsaiconference.com.

UWI Five Islands really stepping up with these forward-thinking conferences.
Me just hope we nah get left behind when tech start running tings.
Curious to see what solutions they propose for small-island challenges.
Imagine faster test results, better patient care—all with AI help.
Faster test results, better patient care? Like any other tool, AI is only as useful as the people making use of it. There still needs to be adequate equipment and enough properly trained personnel with noble values to accomplish lofty goals. Sounds like an interesting conference. Hope everything turns out for the best with this technology. Hope humans will deploy it sensibly for the good of all instead of using it for nefarious purposes such as oppression, control, greed-driven displacement and the like with people abandoning their own common sense and critical thinking in favor of blind allegiance to an inadequate, lesser technology. But, the almost never-ending battle between good and evil probably means it will be used for both.
