Attorney General Calls for Crackdown on Ski Masks Amid Rising Concerns Over Crime

Attorney General Steadroy “Cutie” Benjamin took aim at the troubling rise in the use of ski masks on the streets of Antigua, calling it a dangerous trend that must be stamped out to maintain public safety.

His remarks came during a broader discussion on the introduction of the Anti-Gang Bill 2024, which seeks to tackle escalating gang-related activities across the nation.

AG Benjamin expressed disbelief at the sight of individuals walking through St. John’s in ski masks, despite the tropical climate.

“Antigua is a country of sun and warmth, not a place for ski masks. It’s not like we have snow here, with people skiing up and down the place!” Benjamin remarked, clearly frustrated by the trend, which he sees as linked to criminal intent.

According to the Attorney General, ski masks are often worn by individuals to conceal their identities during criminal activities, including robberies and gang-related incidents.

He stated that the government intends to clamp down on this behavior as part of its wider crime-fighting measures.

“We cannot allow people to walk around with ski masks up to their eyes, hiding their faces while they roam our streets. It’s a public safety issue, and we are going to deal with it,” Benjamin declared.

The Attorney General also linked the use of ski masks to the broader problem of gangs and illegal activity.

He hinted that further regulations might be introduced to prevent the wearing of ski masks in public places, particularly in light of the upcoming hot season, which he noted is expected to be one of the hottest periods on record. “Between now and December, we are going to have the hottest weather in history, and yet we have people walking around with ski masks. What are they hiding? What are their intentions?” he questioned.

AG Benjamin emphasized that the government’s focus is on maintaining peace and security, ensuring that citizens can go about their daily lives without fear. He expressed concern over the intimidation factor of individuals wearing masks in public spaces, such as St. John’s, where residents and tourists alike are alarmed by masked figures in the city center.

As the Anti-Gang Bill moves forward, Benjamin signaled that measures to curtail the use of ski masks will likely be part of a broader legislative effort aimed at reducing crime.

He called for the public’s cooperation, urging citizens to report any suspicious activities and to be vigilant about those who choose to wear masks in inappropriate settings.

  1. I CAN’T UNDERSTAND HOW IT TOOK SO LONG FOR THEM TO CRACK DOWN ON SKI MASK. ANY SENSIBLE PERSON COULD’VE SEEN THE SKI MASK TREND WAS A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN.

  2. I went to Antigua and Barbuda and wore a ski mask nearly all the time because I had breathing problem and did not want anyone to know who I am.

  3. They allowed this all along, they get what they wanted, people had to start losing their life for them to do something, the ruthless ones are those ones making and enforcing the laws. Wonder if they attacked the high officials, maybe then this would have been implemented a long time ago.
