Civic activist Bonnietha John is urging Barbudans to tackle the island’s growing litter problem.
Following a recent clean-up effort, John said residents and volunteers should not have to repeatedly clean up after others. She called for litter wardens to be appointed and fines imposed on offenders to help protect the environment.
John, who recently contested a council seat, also called on elected officials to take greater responsibility.

Yh, the land they love to death!
The pollution situation is extremely disappointing for a beautiful island like Barbuda. The lack of control at the official island’s Dump is evident. Responsibility needs to fall upon the residents, Barbuda Council and Antiguan Government. A proper waste management plan needs to be set. Talk is talk and without actions our words will remain just words blowing wind on the ear.
Shameful
Antigua here is the same, I went to fort James 2 days ago, saw some persons on the beach packing up to leave, when they left there was KFC boxes, other food containers and drinks cans.
Please people be proud of this island and let’s keep it clean thank you. Change your mindset and work towards a cleaner nation.
There MUST be heavy fines for all littering. Either monetary or Community service. No one, to include children should be exempt from littering charges and fines.
Why are we surprised? Barbudans believe they are entitled and we owe them something lazy set of people
