Antigua and Barbuda police launch cold case unit

The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda has established a cold case unit to tackle unsolved murders, missing persons, and other unresolved criminal investigations.

Acting Police Commissioner Everton Jeffers announced the move at the opening of Police Week 2025, held at the Precision Centre, describing it as part of a wider modernisation of the force.

“The Cold Case Unit will bring some level of closure to these cases,” Jeffers said. He added that the force has also expanded training programmes, adopted data-driven policing, and strengthened community engagement.

Recent enhancements include a drone team supporting major national events, and the K9 unit has grown to six dogs, capable of detecting firearms, drugs, explosives, and human remains.

Jeffers highlighted the complex challenges facing policing today, from violent crime and firearms proliferation to cybercrime and human trafficking. “The threats we confront require a police force that is agile and resolute,” he said.

Police Week, themed “Rising to New Challenges and Serving with Greater Dedication,” will feature an Open Day, sporting competitions, a Calypso Monarch contest, and conclude with a Family Fun Day at Ffryes Beach on 14 September.

  1. After the first 48 Hours. In law enforcement cases start to go cold after this time period. With all of the missing persons and unsolved murders in Antigua one would want to believe, that the RPFAB had an established Cold Case Unit. It’s no wonder criminals feel so empowered in Antigua.

  2. Mr. Everton Jeffers. Do your best and when you best is the bestest you can give, dig a little deeper give some more and leave the rest. People will always find fault, and most of us are armchair chatterboxes, carrying a narrative from others without doing our own investigations. I am deeply sorry for anyone who tragically encounters loss of a loved one. However, I have a burning question. Do some of us parents (including myself) know exactly what our children are into? We all have multiple personality, we may not all act on that side of us that can be sinister, but it’s there. Let’s not be so quick to jump on to the narrative wagon without facts. I hope and pray that even if the truths are not what was expected or what we want to hear, at least loved ones can have closure. Good move on establishing the “Cold Case” unit.
