Vendors are asking authorities in charge of St. John’s Development Cooperation to have compassion, consideration and open communication, to help them maneuver during the transitional phase to clean up the streets of St. John’s.

Acting Prime Minister, the Hon. Sir Steadroy Cutie Benjamin meet with vendors, as they requested his present to speak to him about the ongoing changes taken place on Market Street.

During the last few weeks directives have been given by the St. John’s Development Association advising persons selling on market street and all saints road that no one will be allowed to operate on the streets and alternate spots will be assigned within the public market.

Vendors, while speaking with the Acting Prime Minister Benjamin, said they were not formally informed of the decision made, and only saw the communication via social media. Many are of the view that St. John’s Development Association should have met with them and inform them of such plans using the right communication channels.

Many have pleaded with Benjamin, that this is their only sources of income, for which they have already made investment for selling during holy week and would need and opportunity until plans are settled to at least sell their goods.

The Acting Prime Minister, whistle addressing the vendors, said that plans must move ahead in order to clean up the city. He stated that the St. John’s Development Cooperation was given a mandate and will follow through with it, and vendors will be placed within the Public Market.

Benjamin continued that as the Acting Prime Minister and taking into consideration that this is Holy week and persons have already made their investments to source goods, he will inform the authorities at St. John’s Development Association, to allow vendors to operate, this Holy Thursday 17th April and Saturday 19th April ONLY.

He said after holy week no one will be allowed to operate on Market Street or All Saints Road and all vendors are being asked to comply with the rules given by the St. John’s Development Association.

  1. These vendors don’t care about this country and state it is in! they only care about themselves!! Time enough to pack up their lack of customer service and rubbish that surround them and leave!

  2. You see this nonsense? This is why there is chaos with street vending. If a decision was already to stop all vending in certain areas, why tinker with it? Here it is you’re sending mixed signals and then wonder why people feel emboldened to do as they please.

  3. The city is shaping up quite nicely. No changes or leniency is needed. The street is for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Utilize the facilities provided for vending for that specific purpose and stop letting the city look like an old shanty town with old pallets, pieces of board, tarp, and other random make-shift vending stalls. #KeepAntiguaAndBarbudaClean

  4. Political pandering at its best. One reason why the Ciry is in such a shitty mess.
Once the ILLEGAL VENDORS are removed, the store owners MUST not be allowed to put their merchandise on the sidewalks either.

  5. This is what frustrates the.government agencies, when politicians micro manage and go against, the law.
Where is the PM? Is he been deposed in the Alfa Nero Corruption Allegations, in New York? Or, is he on a retreat with the other defendants corroborating with each other, to keep their stories straight?

  6. PeeeeeeeeeM strikes again.
In a toonusual twist the PeeeeeeeeeM has presented himself as the light and shining armour.
How often have we seen this scene in the movie.
The PeeeeeeeeeM sends his minion/messengers out to feel the waters.
When the public cries out he presents himself as the compassionate savior who is there to rescue those so affected.
When will Antiguans watch and understand the movie?
PeeeeeeeeeM you are becoming much too transparent now.
I guess tomorrow we will hear his foot stools saying that it was the UPP behind their removal from the streets of St Johns.
Most of the vendors on the streets of St Johns are non nationals.
He is going to use that as a campaign trick and say that he loves them and was looking into their interest he stopped St Johns Development Corporation from evicting them.
    Not true Gassy!!!!!!!!

  7. KEEP ANTIGUA 🇦🇬 CLEAN TO MUCH RATS 🐀 IN TOWN WE NEED TO DO BETTER IN ANTIGUA 🇦🇬 THIS NONSENSE CAN’T CONTINUE TIME FOR ST.JOHN’S TO LOOK LIKE A TOWN AND NOT A Shanty town I’m not being rude but most of them don’t come from Antigua so they don’t care

  8. I am not surprised. Cutie is a jelly fish. I will not be surprised if the whole decision to clean up amd bring some order to St. John’s is not totally rescinded. When It happens I hope Rawdon Turner will have the guts and integrity to resign his ministerial portfolio. The ABLP only cares about votes..That is the reason there is no discipline or pride in this country Anything goes.

  9. So this missing in action Knighted AG finally made an appearance?
    😂.
I guess he’s a slightly better APM than AG after all.. 😂.

    What a tiny in Antigua.

  10. Frig holy week sales you’ve already made a decision they need to get their unsightly looking tents and poor customer service having assess off the damn streets

  11. If the majority of vendors were Antiguans there would not be any grace period, this administration is mortality afraid of foreigners overgrown Cutie Benjamin makes the workers at SJDC look like idiots

  12. Compassion? Communication? Consideration?

Where are all of these things when I as a pedestrian have to walk in the street because there are vendors on the sidewalks and in the road?

Where are all these things when the vendors put up unsightly shacks?

I have NOTHING against vending. We all have to make a living and eat, but come on man! Come onnnnn. Clean up the place and have a little pride in your areas.

  13. All that area is part of Cutie constituency and he never really cared about the esthetics of the place why would he now, remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

  14. What heartless beasts we have become , ye nation of vipers. How could a GRACE period of a few days cause you to become so harsh and ungodly in this Holy Week! Lord have mercy upon uis ALL!

  15. When a legal order is given by a department of government it should not be undermined by any minister, you only render that department useless but the chief ABLP Lickspittler Faithful National #1 cannot understand that, his head is too far up the Top Dog’s ample backside that he is blinded by stupidity
