The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) has secured two new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBAs) with the American University of Antigua (AUA), covering the period January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2026.

Included in the new agreements are important financial gains for both the line and security employees. The company and the workers agreed to a shared 2.5% increase in the thrift fund contribution, a measure negotiated in lieu of a percentage wage increase for the first year. For the second and third years of the agreements, workers will receive salary increases of 3% each year, providing steady and measurable improvements in compensation.

Significant adjustments were also made to the overtime clause, ensuring that staff can now earn as much as four times their hourly rate under certain conditions. Additionally, increases were secured to the call-out, shift, meal, and graveyard shift allowances, providing further financial relief and recognition for the demands of shift work.

The agreements also introduce enhancements in the non-financial areas. Paternity leave has been increased from five to seven days, giving workers greater support in balancing family responsibilities. Additionally, administrative staff will now be issued uniforms.

ABWU President, Kem Riley said the new package of benefits is a reasonable improvement on the previous agreements. He commended the shop stewards and works committee for their active involvement throughout the process.

“These agreements are testament to the resilience of the workers and the collective strength of their Union,” Riley said. “While the process was not without challenges, the end result places workers in a much better position.”

The ABWU reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding workers’ rights and advancing fair labour standards across all sectors in Antigua and Barbuda.
