St John’s, Antigua – 15 October, 2024 – General Secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU), Sen. David Massiah, along with two representatives from the Union’s transport section – Wendy Nicholas and Briann Russell – have joined more than 2000 transport workers from across the world at the 46th International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) Congress which officially opened in Marrakech, Morocco on Sunday.
The Congress, which is being held under the theme “Transport workers moving the world forward,” will provide an opportunity for delegates from all ITF-affiliated trade unions to share experiences and collectively define priorities for the next five years.
Massiah, who also serves as ITF Tourism Section Chair, underscored the significance of the ABWU’s participation in the Congress. “We want our transport workers in Antigua and Barbuda to appreciate that they are important constituents in a global community. Together, in solidarity with our colleagues from across the globe we can build workers’ power in the transport sector,” Massiah said.
The ITF Congress commenced with a powerful opening ceremony featuring riveting messages of solidarity, peace and justice. Stephen Cotton, ITF General Secretary said “Our actions have always transcended borders. We have kept the world moving through pandemics, wars and economic crises. We are the backbone of the global economy, moving goods and people to every corner of the world.”
Paddy Crumlin, ITF President said “It’s a pivotal moment to strengthen our unity and diversity through stronger regional and sectoral organising, making sure that youth and women lead andshape our movement at every level.” The Congress will run through 19 October and will focus on six critical demands – rights, equality, safety, accountability, sustainability, and a future that works for workers which will form the basis to build a safer, fairer and more sustainable transport industry.
