ABWU Empowers Young Workers Through Annual Training Seminar

Dozens of young workers are now better equipped to navigate the world of work after participating in a two-day training seminar hosted by the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) last week.

The annual event provided participants with vital knowledge on Occupational Safety and Health, the history of the ABWU, and Collective Bargaining. ABWU Training Officer Hazel Luke emphasized the importance of such initiatives in strengthening the workforce.

“We have identified knowledge gaps among our membership, and these training sessions aim to create more informed and capable employees, ultimately contributing to a more robust workforce,” Luke stated.

Other key topics covered during the seminar included Leadership and Communication.

In his opening remarks, ABWU General Secretary David Massiah encouraged young workers to take a more active role in union activities.

“I challenge you to consider how you can begin to make an impact in this organization,” Massiah urged.

Participants described the training as an enriching and eye-opening experience.

“I learned so much about conducting myself in the workplace. I’m going back to work with a new mindset and a better understanding of how to approach certain situations,” one young woman shared.

Another attendee echoed similar sentiments: “It was very helpful. I gained a lot of knowledge, and I’m looking forward to becoming a better employee. It was also a lot of fun!”

Training seminars and workshops are among the key benefits offered to members of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union. These initiatives empower workers by building their capacity and equipping them with the tools for success in their careers.

The Youth Seminar is the first event on the ABWU’s 2025 training calendar. In August, the union will host its annual Youth Congress, which is expected to bring together close to 100 young workers along with featured regional and international speakers and trainers.
