ABWU Announces Dr Dwayne ‘Baba’ Thwaites as Featured Speaker for 2025 Men’s Conference

The Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) has announced that renowned urologist Dr Dwayne “Baba” Thwaites will be a featured speaker at its 2025 International Men’s Day Conference, scheduled for 19 November.

The event, themed “Healthy Men, Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Society,” will place a strong focus on men’s physical and mental well-being, early detection and healthier working environments. The Union said Dr Thwaites’ involvement reflects its commitment to elevating national and regional conversations on men’s health.

Widely regarded as one of the Caribbean’s leading specialists in urology, Dr Thwaites has built a career spanning decades of clinical excellence, research and public health advocacy. His training includes work at several major institutions in the United States, among them the University of Miami, Emory University and the State University of New York.

A graduate of Ottos Comprehensive School and St Joseph’s Academy, Dr Thwaites pursued undergraduate studies at St Leo University in Florida before completing post-baccalaureate work at the University of South Florida. He later earned his medical degree from the University of Miami and went on to complete a general surgery residency in New York, followed by a trauma fellowship at St Vincent Hospital in Staten Island.

He served as Chief of Surgery at Alexandra Hospital in Nevis, where he performed the first laparoscopic surgery in the Eastern Caribbean. After further specialising in urology at Emory University and the University of Miami, he returned to the region and performed its first laser prostatectomy. He continues to operate a thriving urology practice and leads annual prostate screening initiatives across the Eastern Caribbean.

The ABWU said Dr Thwaites’ pioneering achievements and commitment to early detection make him an essential contributor to this year’s programme. The conference will take place on Wednesday, 19 November 2025.
