ABST Reduced to 7% for Christmas Shopping Weekend
Prime Minister and Finance Minister Hon. Gaston Browne has announced a significant reduction in the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) for the upcoming Christmas season. From December 20 to 22, 2024, the sales tax will be reduced from 17% to 7%, offering shoppers substantial savings during the yuletide season.
The announcement was made during the Browne and Browne Show on Pointe FM on Saturday. The 10-percentage-point reduction is aimed at providing financial relief to consumers while encouraging increased spending during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
Local businesses are expected to see a boost in activity as residents take advantage of the temporary tax cut. The government’s initiative is part of its broader strategy to support economic growth while easing the financial burden on households during the holiday season.

Wait just one weekend, things really hard
Well lort in Madea voice. Things really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really bad.
So for people who want to buy paint to nice up their houses etc, this is no use to them. ABLP always so tight whenever Antiguans and Barbudans are to benefit a little from their own resources but open the floodgates for themselves, families and cronies. Look at the paying of pack pay. First they tried to let it look like a bonus salary since St Kitts was giving one. Now they are addressing the backpay issue, they want to take out that “bonus” and pay the difference. So some workers will get 200, 300 dollars.
Bull poo poo, why not ABST free, things hard no bitch
This government isn’t for the people. With all the wealth we were told came from new taxes, CIP and a rise in tourism, you’d think the ABLP would give more to the people who really do the hard work. Why is this tax reduction given so late in the month?
And why not a full no tax day or two?
Wonder if this applies for if im clearing a car at the port!?!?
Ate people going to see genuine savings though? Price regulation?
It is what it is. Take it or leave it.
when Cool and Smooth sells their refurbished IPhones for a reasonable price I’ll believe it
Why can’t the government of A&B just give its citizens the full 17% off. People are literally suffering financially in this place. While he is boasting of profits in various departments. For heaven sakes, it’s Christmas, dovthe right thing. Gift your people, we deserve it. Take off the entire 17% for the weekend and callbit tax free weekend.
Thank you, PM, for the most welcome gesture. “…..the wagon keeps rolling on”
Thank u Mr pm amen to that . I can’t please everyone
I wish we had reduced taxes for the Christmas season in the US. You all had better be grateful. Pay your taxes. That’s the way the country is being run. You want pay increases but still want ABST-free weekends? Impossible!!!
Reduced? It needs to be eliminated. Cost of living so high and this wicked ALP government taxing us to death.
@David Ray, sounds like you don’t live here so how would you know how it feels to be poor and struggling in Antigua.
See i tell you ANR Readers.. Garrots ALWAYS want EVERYTHING for FREE! It’s iN their nature. They get a 14% increase, duty free vehicles for God knows for how many years…Dollar Barrels, subsidies from PDV..ETC…and YET still all these complaints indistinctive of a Native Garot..
I tell you again… ANTIGUANS ARE A BUNCH OF COMPLAINING FREELOADERS!
People complain because the Math is not matching sadly. If a person needs X dollars to eat healthy in the way the experts dictate, and Y dollars for clothing to get through the seasons – cold, hot, rainy and do their duty at work, home, run errands etc. and Z dollars for housing to withstand the rain, storms, heat, intruders etc. (not to mention other costs such as transportation, healthcare, some entertainment, and to save for self-improvement courses or retirement) and they have less than X + Y + Z available, of course they will complain. Let’s say X + Y + Z = $10 and they only have $7. If you give them $1 or even $2, they still do not have enough to be completely comfortable and at peace. So, they might be grateful for the $2 but will still complain why not $3? The reality is that the cost of living properly exceeds many persons’ salaries even with little freebies here and there. But, of course it’s best to try to help oneself or work together to improve incomes in other ways instead of waiting on others or the government for everything. Hope they still pay people early though at mid month because December is very expensive and many persons were expecting that so it might cause a lot of problems if they don’t…
