Government Yet to Announce Replacement for Senate Vacancy
The Antigua and Barbuda government has not yet made a final decision on who will replace MP Turner in the Senate, though discussions are ongoing, with Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressing a preference for a young female candidate to fill the seat.
During the Post-Cabinet press briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst acknowledged that deliberations are still taking place, and no official announcement has been made.
“There has been some discussion, but no final decision has been made. I know the Prime Minister is looking at someone who is in his or her twenties. He wants primarily a female, and he also wants someone in their twenties,” Hurst revealed.
Browne’s preference for a younger appointee aligns with his broader strategy to introduce new leadership and provide opportunities for younger individuals to gain experience in governance.
“We must begin to rebuild because as parliamentarians age, and as we know government work, it is necessary to ready a younger group of interested persons in governance,” Hurst added.
The vacancy arose after Senator Caleb Gardiner replaced Osbert Frederick as Speaker of the House of Representatives, leaving an open seat in the Upper House. The government is expected to finalize and announce the replacement in the coming weeks.

Hope they choose someone who brings fresh ideas, not just another party loyalist.
The process should be transparent—citizens deserve to know the criteria for selection.
Will this be a real change or just another seat-filler?
A chance to add diverse perspectives—let’s see if they take it!
Merit over politics! The Senate needs independent thinkers, not just party votes.
Wonder if the opposition will have any say or if this is a done deal.
@Devron Carter
Where does the opposition come into this? The Prime Minister has the sole responsibility of appointing whomever he or she chooses to sit in the senate to represent lthe government’s focus.
The leader of the opposition in parliament has the same the same privilege in selecting his senators, albeit a smaller number by constitution.
The senators’ duties are not being new ideas as someone suggested. They’re expected to their perspective in favor of (or against) bills brought to the senate from the lower house. They can decide on adjustments to the bills before it is returned to the lower house for ratification.
They represent the ideas the current administration while the other members across the floor represent the his royal legal opposition.
Empowering the youth and females is a politically progressive stance to take in grooming future elected public servants.
What discussion are you talking about. Gaston makes a decision and the STRAW MEN go along and say YES MASSA please do not give them any credit they all all YES MEN or if you prefer JUMBY CRABS
