Union Honours Rufus Lewis and Hilroy Humphreys for Lifelong Service to Workers’ Movement
Two stalwarts of the trade union and political movement in Antigua and Barbuda were recognised on Labour Day for their decades-long contributions to the Antigua Trades and Labour Union (ATLU) and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).
During Monday’s Labour Day rally, the ATLU and ABLP jointly honoured Comrade Rufus Lewis and Comrade Hilroy Humphreys, describing them as foundational figures in the labour movement whose dedication and service continue to inspire.
Though Lewis, 98, was unable to attend in person, a member of his family accepted the award on his behalf and delivered an emotional message of thanks.
“Our father is the union and the union is him,” said one of Lewis’s sons. “At 98, he still remembers every detail of his time in the movement. We are so thankful for this gesture, and I know when I take this home to him, his smile will light up the whole night.”
Lewis has been celebrated in previous years as one of the longest-serving and most dedicated members of the union, having committed his life to advancing the rights of workers across the country.
Hilroy Humphreys, who was present to receive his award, was praised for over six decades of service to the party and union, dating back to his youth. Prime Minister Gaston Browne said former colleagues, including members of the late Lester Bird’s Cabinet, described him as a lifelong servant of the people.
“He’s one of the individuals who served this organisation from the time he was a juvenile,” Prime Minister Gaston Browne noted. “We stand on the contributions of Comrade Humphreys and those who came before us.”
Humphreys, known for his warm humour, briefly addressed the crowd after accepting his award.
“I already got all my blessings from the constituents of All Saints and All Saints West a long time ago,” he quipped. “Only one thing—I’m kind of vexed the Prime Minister had to say 60 years… now you all going to know how old I am!”

Hilroy Humphrey…….
Don’t remember much of his political career.
However I have interacted with him post politics.
He is a great humanitarian and businessman.
Congratulations on being recognized Mr Humphrey.
You deserve any award bestowed on you.

Is this the same Hilroy Humphreys of the Medical Benefits Inquiry fame. I hope not, the Prime Minister was running down the Opposition for the kind of people they attract; from my recollection none of them have sunk to that depth
@Antiguan in the US What depth? Recall a judge fining him and he later appealed and won. UPP has a MP (Bowen) who was actually convicted and sent to prison for killing a young lady and a main spokesperson (Magic)who is a convicted pedophile.

Can someone tell me how to stop these add popping up before opening a story. I found those from CG United to be despicable and cringy especially that one with the lady now having this huge right ear. Who really vets these things?
