Local and regional football entities have joined forces to donate to islands in dire need of relief supplies including sister-isle Barbuda and further afield.
The Antigua Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) and the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), today, made relief donations to the islands of Barbuda and Dominica after previously lending aid to St. Maarten and Anguilla.
The football union consists of 31 member countries from as far north as Puerto Rico to Guyana in the south.
The union will also make aid available to the BVI, USVI and Puerto Rico as it seeks to, “give to all of the countries in our body who have gotten hit the hardest by the recent Hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria,” says CFU general secretary Neil Cochrane.
“This is an initiative spearheaded by our acting president, Randolph Harris…We are indeed pleased to have collaborated with the Antigua Barbuda Football Association in bringing whatever relief we can to our brothers and sisters in Barbuda,” Cochrane explained.
“That is the beauty of football,” says ABFA president Everton “Batow” Gonsalves.
“Although, a lot of people might think that we limit the beautiful game on the field this is a clear example of what football can do off the field.”
The Antigua Barbuda government forcibly evacuated Barbuda after the September 5th devastation caused by Hurricane Irma. Since then, the evacuation order has been lifted and some of the 1,600-plus Barbudans have gone back home to rebuild the country but many remain in Antigua at this point.
Many of the relief items donated by both football associations will go to Barbudans staying in shelters here in Antigua.
