With the March 16 by-election in St Philip’s North approaching, election officials say logistical preparations are intensifying to ensure the vote proceeds smoothly.

Supervisor of Elections Ian S. Hughes said the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) began mobilising immediately after Thursday’s issuance of the Writ of Elections and is now moving toward Nomination Day on March 25. Work is ongoing to finalise polling stations, staffing and voter services.

The by-election follows the resignation of long-serving MP Sir Robin Yearwood after 50 consecutive years in office.

Hughes said ABEC anticipates an uptick in residents seeking to renew or update voter identification cards. To meet demand, the Registration Office in Glanville will add staff, extend working hours and may open on weekends.

There are currently 1,972 eligible voters in the constituency as of October 2025, with eight additional names to be added from November and December registrations. Those registered in January will also qualify. By comparison, 1,876 people were eligible to vote in the 2023 General Elections.

ABEC says it remains focused on ensuring an orderly and transparent process for the nearly 2,000 voters expected to participate.

  1. Just hoping no voters would be transferred into this Constituency from other Constituencies. There was a recording of a man saying he did that,in the last Election. What the hell did ABEC do about it? Not one damn thing.

  2. Have no confidence in this commission at all. When someone could admit to cheating the system and allowed to get away with it what does that say about the Commission and the people who works there, either in collusion or simply incompetent

  3. Facial expressions: me a go make some money from Gaston to manipulate and move people into st Phillips north to vote like we did to Harold Lovell.
