The Antigua Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) Coast Guard completed the transfer of a Search and Rescue (SAR) survivor yesterday, Sunday 07th December 2024, who was found in distress off the coast of Puerto Rico.

The ABDF Coast Guard received information from the Captain of Motor Tanker (M/T) ORANGE OCEAN at approximately 4:00 pm local time, of a Polish national which they rescued from his burning vessel, Sailing Vessel (S/V) POESTERED approximately 420 nautical miles off Puerto Rico. According to reports, POESTERED departed Bermuda for St Martin when the vessel encountered complications in the middle of the ocean. M/T ORANGE OCEAN whose original port of call is Santos, Brazil, responded to the distressed and winched him safely onboard.

Thereafter, the ABDF Coast Guard coordinated efforts with M/T ORANGE OCEAN, who had already entered Antiguan waters, to conduct the SAR survivor’s transfer at sea. Coast Guard asset Delta 7 (D7) received the gentleman approximately 7 nautical miles off Salt-Fish Tail and returned to shore for further processing.

On arrival back to the Coast Guard base, members of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Department of Immigration were already postured to provide assistance where necessary to the survivor. After conducting due diligence through health checks by the EMS and light interviews, the gentleman was transported and will be further transited to his next destination by Immigration Officials.

The ABDF takes this time to reaffirm its commitment to all Mariners, both local and international, toward ensuring the safety, security and continued assistance of all its users; through organic and collaborated efforts with all our partners in the wider Caribbean region and around the world.
