Aaliyah Ramsey Retracts Public Allegation Against PM Gaston Browne
Aaliyah Ramsey has publicly withdrawn an allegation made against Prime Minister Gaston Browne, clarifying that her original statement suggested unlawful conduct and may have caused reputational harm.
In a post published on Facebook on Monday morning, Ramsey said her initial remarks, which referred to the Prime Minister in critical terms, had crossed a legal line.
“Following some reflection, and a crash course in how the rules of public discourse work when lawyers get involved, I now understand that my choice of words was inappropriate and potentially misleading,” she wrote.
Ramsey acknowledged that her statement could have been defamatory under Antigua and Barbuda’s Defamation Act 2015, and issued a formal retraction in keeping with the requirements of the law.
“While I stand by my right to express opinions as a citizen, particularly on matters involving public interest, I also recognise the legal boundary between personal expression and defamation,” she said.
She added that she chose to publish the clarification “in the same space and tone as the original post,” explaining that “public statements deserve public corrections.”
In response, Prime Minister Browne accepted the apology and confirmed he would halt legal action.
“Apology accepted,” he said. “I will cancel the instructions given yesterday to my attorney, Jarid Hewlett, to pursue for defamation.”
The exchange comes amid increased public scrutiny of political discourse on social media platforms in Antigua and Barbuda.

We must always keep the discourse cordial and respectful even in disagreement. But respect must be from all sides and not just one. Even when someone think that they are being slandered, the appropriate way to respond is not to call the person dreadful and atrocious names. I have seen some comments from both sides that are both impolite, insulting, demeaning, unflattering and unhelpful. Let’s be adults and grown ups here.
