Another proud moment for Antigua and Barbuda and Prime Minister the Hon. Gaston Browne as the SIDS Centre of Excellence has now made a significant step towards becoming a reality.

On the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, the CoE was launched during a brief ceremony this morning attended by a number of leaders from across SIDS, UN agencies, development partners and leading experts in a variety of fields.

The Centre of Excellence is perhaps one of the most significant outcomes of the SIDS4 Conference which was hosted in Antigua and Barbuda last year. It is now beginning to take shape with its very own consultant, Dr. Jennifer in Blanke, in place.

Dr. Blanke as part of the ceremony this morning provided a detailed presentation on the structure, vision and the role of the Centre in advancing the goals of all Small Island Developing States.

According to Prime Minister Browne: โ€œThis Centre is more than an institution, it is a declaration of agency. For too long, SIDS have been framed only by our vulnerabilities. Today, through this Centre, we demonstrate our capacity to innovate, to lead, and to shape a fairer and more resilient global future.โ€

A formal opening ceremony of the Centre will take place in Antigua and Barbuda later this year.
