Antigua and Barbuda has been deeply shaken by the recent tragedy that claimed the lives of two young individuals. This loss is heartbreaking, not only for their families and loved ones, but for our entire nation. When young lives are taken, we are all reminded of how fragile life is, and how urgently we must do more.
As a National Youth Ambassador, I speak with both a heavy heart and a deep sense of responsibility. This is not just a moment for mourning. It is a moment for action.
We must stand in solidarity with the grieving families, call for justice, and firmly condemn the violence that continues to threaten our young people. Every young person in this country deserves to feel safe, supported, and valued in their own community.
But solidarity alone is not enough. There is a growing and urgent need for stronger youth intervention programmes, accessible safe spaces, and consistent mentorship that can reach young people before they are led down harmful paths. Many of our youth are searching for belonging, guidance, and understanding. It is our collective responsibility to ensure they find it in positive, supportive environments rather than dangerous ones.
This is also a call to those of us who work directly with young people. Youth ambassadors, mentors, community leaders, and advocates: we must come together for open and honest conversations about the challenges our youth are facing. We must listen more carefully, engage more intentionally, and follow through with real commitment. Because sometimes, the most powerful impact comes from young people supporting and uplifting one another.
Through my work with the Hopeful Hearts Foundation, I have seen firsthand how a single conversation, a consistent mentor, or a safe space to be heard can change the direction of a young person’s life. When we invest in our youth, we invest in the future of our nation.
Let this moment not be one that simply passes. Let it be the moment that moves us, with compassion, with unity, and with purpose.
To the families affected: we stand with you.
And to every young person in Antigua and Barbuda, your life matters, your future matters, and you are not alone.
