A Bendals man was fined $45,000 on drug charges in the St. John’s Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
James Dean, 57yrs old of Bendals appeared before Chief Magistrate Walsh charged with Cultivation of 760 Cannabis plants, Possession of 2 ½ pounds of cured Cannabis, Possession with intent to Sell, and Being Concerned with the Supply of a Controlled Drug to wit Cannabis.
He was convicted and fined $30,000 of the charge of Cultivation and $15,000 for Possession. He was reprimanded on the other two charges.
He was ordered to pay $5,000 forthwith, while the remaining sum is to be paid in instalments of $5,000 each at the end of May and June respectively and $10,000 each at the end of July, August and September of 2017. In default he would serve two years at Her Majesty’s Prison.
The Court heard that officers attached to the K-9 Unit conducted a drug operation in Bendals last Wednesday, and found Dean on a Cannabis Cultivation with 760 plants growing. Another 2 ½ pounds of the cured substance was also discovered on the farm and was seized.
He was arrested and taken into custody and the plants were uprooted and taken to the police station
