Antiguan Students Sheltered at Pegasus Hotel as Hurricane Melissa Nears Jamaica
More than 40 Antiguan and Barbudan students studying in Jamaica have been relocated to the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel as Hurricane Melissa strengthens and threatens to impact the island.
The precautionary move, coordinated by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda in partnership with the Antigua and Barbuda Students’ Association (ABSA), is intended to safeguard students during the storm’s passage.
So far, 46 students have taken shelter at the Kingston-based hotel under an arrangement covering two nights’ accommodation and meals, provided that students present a valid Antiguan passport and university identification.
ABSA Public Relations Officer Rohan Telemaque said bringing everyone together in one secure location ensures safety and better coordination.
“It helps the overall ABSA body having everyone in one spot so if there is need for emergency evacuation we can all leave together,” Telemaque said.
The Antiguan government is working closely with student leaders to monitor the storm and provide additional assistance if required. Officials reiterated their commitment to protecting nationals studying overseas, especially during emergencies.
Jamaican authorities have urged residents and visitors to remain vigilant as Hurricane Melissa, recently upgraded from a tropical storm, is expected to unleash heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding across parts of the island in the coming days.

Grateful the students are being looked after. Natural events like Melissa can be unpredictable.
Stay safe. We are praying for u
It’s good to see quick action being taken to protect students. Safety first!
Please stay indoors and safe guys
Government please pay the bill when the students leave.
Don’t embarrass us. Thanks!🤔
I think we had enough time since this system has been moving so slowly towards Jamaican. Since it seems to be agreed that they will stay under this protective umbrella, I think that 2day is insufficient. From the forecast flooding will be already experienced a day of two before. Then since it is so slow moving it will take more than 24 hours for it to pass. They the aftermath which is very critical that people should stay indoors, unless the place is cleaned up etc. So I think it should be more like 5 days to a full week. I know it was not budgeted for, but it’s not too much to did deep for the sake of our future generations. One life lost will be devastating to us and to the student body. Praying for their safety!
Get the students home today please
They should have been on a Lait flight since Friday. But don’t listen to me Gatson. The after math after this hurricane will be a mess. The looting and steeling will be the biggest problem.
You should have used one of the “people’s” aircraft and go for the students.
What a caring government we have. Taking care of our children in times like this is more then anyone could have asked from their government. All expenses paid. If I had a child amongst those there I woud be very grateful to this government. Becasue one can imaging the worries the parents of these children would have knowing what a category 5 storm could do. Being together in one space give them strenght tp weather the storm together and that in a luxury setting.
