$21M Renal Center Under Construction at Old Holberton Hospital Site

The Antigua and Barbuda government is moving forward with the construction of a $21 million renal center at the Old Holberton Hospital site, as part of efforts to expand kidney care services in the country.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed the project during a recent interview on Pointe FM, stating that the facility is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

“We are substantially along in the construction of the renal center, and it should be finished before the year is out,” Browne said, adding that the center will help address the growing demand for dialysis treatment in Antigua and Barbuda.

The new facility is being developed to enhance access to specialized care for patients with kidney disease, reducing the burden on Mount St. John’s Medical Centre (MSJMC). It is expected to be equipped with modern dialysis machines and advanced treatment capabilities, offering improved services for those requiring regular treatment.

In addition to the renal center, Browne reiterated the government’s commitment to healthcare expansion, mentioning ongoing plans to establish a cardiac unit to strengthen the country’s medical infrastructure.

The Old Holberton Hospital site has been repurposed for various medical initiatives, including the Infectious Disease Control Center. Browne indicated that discussions are ongoing to further develop the location into a comprehensive healthcare hub.
