IICA ECS Representative Pay Courtesy visit to key Partners and Stakeholders
St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, September 23rd, 2024. The ECS –IICA Representative Mr. Gregg Rawlins during his visit to Antigua and Barbuda for the 2023 Annual Accountability Seminar paid several courtesy visits to key partners and stakeholders.
Mr. Rawlins visited the newly appointed Minister of Agriculture Hon. Anthony Smith where he renewed IICA’s commitment to continue working jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture towards sustainable agricultural and rural development within Antigua and Barbuda. The Minister along with his technical team expressed gratitude offered by IICA through the institute’s technical cooperation. Discussion was mainly surrounding water and what are the innovative technologies which would be used to harness the country’s water challenges.
IICA is currently executing a rehabilitation project of the Antigua Black pineapple a project which was requested by the previous Minister of Agriculture Hon. Chet Greene an initiative in in the Cades Bay Pineapple Station to rapid multiply the pineapple through tissue culture.
Additional courtesy visit were paid to the newly appointed Foreign Affair Permanent Secretary Mr. Clarence Pilgrim discuss matters which IICA can be of an assistance to strengthen the agriculture sector in Antigua and Barbuda to find solutions to the challenges in agriculture and rural development faced by farmers.
Courtesy visit were also conducted at the CARDI field station with the CARDI Representative Mr. Junior Greene where Mr. Rawlins was given a tour of the plant nursery to observer the different research activities currently been undertaken at the field station.
Meetings were held with Mr. Michael Joseph a young farmer who attended the recently concluded youth symposium held in Dominica. Discussion was among how Mr. Joseph can contribute to the revitalization of the youths in agriculture agenda which is a focus for both IICA and the Ministry of Agriculture.
A major action completed was the signing of a MoU between IICA and the Department of Environment which will focus on both agencies working together to develop capacities for improving climate change adaptation in the agricultural sector in Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean, as well as support decision making and actions to improve the environmental sustainability and the efficient management of natural resources in Antigua and Barbuda.
