The government has invested $21 million in acquiring a fleet of heavy-duty equipment to support road repairs and construction in 2025.
During her presentation in the 2025 Budget Debate, Housing Minister Maria Browne highlighted the importance of this investment in addressing infrastructure challenges and reducing reliance on rented machinery.
“By the end of this month, some [equipment] will have landed already, and at the end of this month, some more will come,” Browne stated. “Going into January and February 2025, all of our equipment should be here.”
The equipment includes graders, rollers, spreaders, T-machines, and excavators, which will allow the government to undertake roadworks without delays caused by machinery shortages.
Minister Browne acknowledged the difficulties faced in 2024, including the need to rent equipment due to aging and frequently broken-down machinery.
The minister also highlighted efforts to ensure a trained workforce for operating the new equipment.
“We’ve teamed up with the Ministry of Education to have this training program for heavy-duty operators, an accredited training program, by the way, so when they’ve gotten their certificate here, they can operate elsewhere in the region and even internationally,” she noted.
The upgraded fleet will be critical in addressing road repairs across Antigua and Barbuda, including long-neglected community roads and major infrastructure projects.
The acquisition is part of a broader initiative to improve efficiency and deliver quality infrastructure solutions.

The PWD Director is a waste of time. PM Browne when he done with Maria Browns her political career will be over. He is full of excuses and no solutions. The laziest and worst director of PWD ever. So invested 21 million dollars or 21billion dollars worth of equipment and give this lazy greedy guy makes no difference. He will find a trillion more excuses not to advance our road development. The sooner you replace him the better. The replacement doesn’t have to be an engineer. It needs someone that can manage and ensure that the work is delivered. They can have engineers working under them.
Don’t let him play any politics, he got the position by pretending to be a labourrite . If he was a true labour supporter he would have gone much more with the resources he have. Don’t put new wine in old bottle. Put the new equipment in someone else’s hand. You cannot say that you were not warned over and over.
