According to climatologist Dale Destin, 2024 recorded 1361.9 mm (53.62 in) of rainfall, making it Antigua’s wettest year since 2011 and the 20th wettest on record.

This exceeded forecasts by Destin’s 268Weather and marked a sharp recovery from 2023’s drought.

The dry season (January to June) saw more rainfall than the wet season, with 691.9 mm (27.24 in)—69% above average.

Destin said February alone delivered a record-breaking 180.1 mm (7.09 in), contributing significantly to the year’s total.

Flash floods, particularly in May, caused disruption, while summer (June to August) rainfall was the highest since 2011.

Despite a near-normal wet season, December’s 41.7 mm (1.64 in) marked the driest December since 2001.

Above-normal rainfall was driven by favourable sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic, Destin explained.

Forecasts for 2025 are expected by April 25. “Think rain!” he concluded.

  1. Naturally! It’s cyclic, and during the periods of droughts, the farmers and others who are into agriculture were preaching to and beseeching the government, to upgrade, clean, contour our natural fresh water sites to be ready for this rainy cycle.

Personally, I was advocating for the upgrading and even building of new Water Catchments; which can be designed as green spaces, arboretums, parks etc; and, in some Communities can even be a temporary supply of potable water.

Anyway, it’s either “water under the bridge,” or “water in storage,” it’s all good some great organic farming.

    …for, when the rains fall,
…they don’t fall, on one man’s house top!
    …so, grow what you know!
    …eat what you grow!
…fu sure! For sho! Fu sure!

  2. So how come we can’t get water in our pipes?
Water, water everywhere and we can’t get enough to drink🤔
    Can’t figure this out???
    Only in antigua!

  3. With so much rain in 2024, yet the water shortage remains the same, or even worse than before. There isn’t enough water catchment to harvest the amount of runoff water which goes directly to the sea. This Government is Hellbent on building more RO plants, which can be seen to be not sustainable and unaffordable for our people to maintain their cost. These Reverse Osmosis plants are only for a limited time, yet the water Engineer keeps on approving and sanctioning the purchasing of these disposable gadgets, knowing very well, that there are other and better alternatives.
This Labour Party Administration is not committed to solving the water crisis, if so, it would already solved this problem long time ago. Take a good look at the water catchment infrastructure around this Country, which you will find to be, is almostly nonexistent to say the least.
The Government has deliberately failed to build more Dams, while existing ones are left in ruins and lacks the capacity of harvesting any water of consequence, if this situation is not willful and deliberate, then what else is the reason. This situation clearly points out and indicates to all Antiguans, of the Antigua Labour Party Administration, unwillingness to improve the provision of potable water to its Citizens and are leaving this calamity for other Government to rectify.
While Antiguans are not receiving any water supply from APUA, water bills keeps on increasing on a regular basis. In any other real Country, the water Engineers would have been fired a long time ago, instead of having the Prime Minister keeps on accusing the workers of sabotaging the system, not realising that the incompetentcy of the water managers, is creating the problem by not doing their job as required and consumers should not pay their water bills, if they are not receiving any water.
It’s a blatant shame to know that this country suffers from severe draught, but our Government failed to construct Dams and other water catchments to aliviate the Country’s water dependency, on solely Reverse Osmosis water..
