Described as a “90-year-old force of nature”, Miriam Samuel celebrated a year filled with milestones, memories and culinary triumphs. The retired teacher, agro processor and author known affectionately as Grandma Mirie, embraced life with healthy humor and heart, sharing her Pep Up De Pot organic seasoning and herbal supplements, blending legacy with the healing power of her garden.
Top 10 Highlights from Grandma Mirie’s 2024 (a.k.a. How to Live Life Like a Legend)
1. Meeting Sir Viv Richards (because legends recognize legends).
Picture this – Grandma Mirie, cricket icon Sir Viv, and $2 EC notes signed by the man himself. Not only did she meet him, but she spread the love by gifting these prized mementos as part of her Legacy Book Tour. Now, that’s how you score runs in life.
2. Her 90th Birthday Church Service (standing room only).
When you turn 90, the crowd better show up. And show up they did! Grandma Mirie is a woman of faith and her milestone birthday was celebrated with a church service packed with her family (including six surviving siblings), friends, and well-wishers who left no pew empty.
3. Book Launch: Mirie’s Magic Recipe – Loving, Leading, Legacy.
There’s something magical about holding your life story in your hands – especially when people line up to have it signed by you. Her memoir became more than just a book; it became a movement.
4. Return to Anguilla (with VIP tour guide and genealogist Dr. Tim Hodge).
Grandma Mirie’s return to Anguilla felt like a heartfelt homecoming, filled with memories and meaningful connections, including meeting Premier Ellis Webster. She left a lasting mark by donating her book to the Public Library and cherished reconnecting with the daughter of her mother’s best friend, sharing stories that bridged generations.
5. Wales – 20 Years Later.
Returning to the land of dragons and daffodils after two decades brought back cherished memories. It was great to reconnect with her church family and revisit familiar landmarks. (Note to self: Always create great memories as a reason to return to a destination.)
6. National Award (because legends deserve hardware).
Grandma Mirie’s lifelong contributions were officially recognized at the national level. Awards look good on her – but service looks even better.
7. Caribbean Global Awards – Extraordinary Achievement (because “ordinary” isn’t in her vocabulary).
Her influence didn’t stop at home – the Caribbean came calling to honor her in the U.K. In the presence of the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, Grandma Mirie accepted with grace (and probably with a bottle of her essential oil in her purse).
8. Culinary Collaborations (with some serious chef firepower).
Grandma Mirie collaborated with top chefs, including Anguilla’s Kerth Gumbs and Kelston Connor, learning to make sushi and a decadent “ducuna-inspired” dessert. She also joined a culinary discussion with Antiguan chef Kareem Roberts and Levi Roots of Reggae Reggae Sauce fame. Inspired by the experience, she launched a contest to name her organic seasoning – Pep Up De Pot emerged as the winning name.
9. Her Granddaughter’s Art on Display (cue proud tears).
Watching her granddaughter Odessa’s artwork shine during Art Week was proof that creativity runs deep in the family. Recognizing Odessa’s talent, she signed her up for Art classes at the age of 8. (Odessa, created the cover of Grandma Mirie’s book). The grandmother might season pots, but her granddaughter seasons canvases.
10. Sharing Her Talents (because everyone deserves sweet treats).
In Chapter 3 of her book titled, “Once a Teacher, Forever a Motivator and Way-Maker,” Grandma Mirie’s lifelong passion for teaching and uplifting others shines through her work. One of her proudest moments was teaching prisoners to make mango cheese on International Mango Day, blending community service with culinary creativity. She’s on a mission to visit all nine schools where she taught, donating her book to their libraries to inspire future generations.
The Year’s Bitter-Sweet Moments
Biggest Disappointment:
The passing of her dear friend Evelyn Adams in the UK while she was there. A 75-year friendship, irreplaceable and cherished.
Biggest Surprise:
Her memoir blossomed into a full-on brand. (Also surprising: her family’s hidden publishing talents!)
Biggest Challenge:
Lesson learned – making great products is one thing, promoting them is another. (Hint: Mirie’s ProsperiTea Market is coming in Jan 2025!)
Grandma Mirie’s Wisdom
On Generosity:
“Give your time, talents, or tamarind oil – kindness creates a ripple effect.”
To Her Younger Self:
“Memories are life’s greatest treasure – collect and share them.”
Here’s to 2025 and the chance to create more magic, more memories, and maybe even a documentary and a second memoir. Merry Christmas from Grandma Mirie – and all those fortunate enough to have received a famously autographed $2 bill.
