Jennings to See 150 New Housing Units Early Next Year, Says PM Browne

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has confirmed that the government will begin the second phase of its housing programme in Jennings early next year, with plans to construct 150 new units.

Speaking during the Browne and Browne radio show, Mr Browne said land had already been earmarked for the development, covering about eight acres. The initiative mirrors earlier projects such as the Booby Alley redevelopment in St John’s.

The Prime Minister explained that the Jennings project will serve a dual purpose—offering modern homes to local residents while also relocating families living in substandard conditions elsewhere, including Perry Bay. “We intend to move out some of the people at Perry Bay who are living in squalor… but we have to do a carve-out for people from Jennings too. We’re not going to displace them,” he said.

Mr Browne added that sufficient land was available in Jennings to accommodate both groups, ensuring the development integrates existing community members alongside those resettled from other parts of the island.

The project is part of the government’s broader effort to address inadequate housing and improve living standards across Antigua and Barbuda.
