The Antigua and Barbuda Red Cross, with the aid of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, launched a cash delivery program to assist affected population in their returning process to Barbuda one week ago. This program will assist the recovering population to improve their lives based on the needs expressed by them. This support is complementary to the actions of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda and other partner organizations.
During the first phase of the program in September of 2017, four hundred and thirty households received cash support, provided through debit cards to the displaced population in Antigua. This was to ensure that the population was able to cover the immediate basic needs that were created by relocating to Antigua. The implementation of the first round of Cash Transfer Programme (CTP) was successful, in terms of procedures, mechanism and in the use beneficiaries gave to the funds.
A second round of CTP was launched on Barbuda last week with a budget of ECD195,000. The debit card mechanism used in the second phase of the CTP will include; one debit card per household, which will be activated to withdraw funds within one-month period. The selection criteria is composed of persons that were residents in Barbuda at the time of Hurricane Irma, registered with the Red Cross on Barbuda in 2018, and currently living in Barbuda.
One beneficiary Ann Marie Gore had this to say about the Cash Transfer Program: “I am very grateful for the Cash Transfer Program, it is a good initiative because the help is needed. There is no water where I live so that and other items are needed daily. I am very lucky because I do have a roof over my head, and the aid of water, utensils and appliances has been very helpful to me.”
