Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph says 120 nurses are expected to arrive in Antigua and Barbuda in the coming weeks, providing relief for an overstretched public health system.
Speaking during the Governor General’s annual visit to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre on Tuesday, Joseph said mounting pressure on the hospital’s emergency department has exposed limits in its size and design.
About 25,000 patients used the emergency department this year—more than 2,000 a month—far beyond what the facility was built to handle, he said.
“The size of the emergency department cannot accommodate this volume,” Joseph said, adding that policy discussions between the Health Ministry and hospital administrators will begin shortly to address the strain.
He said solutions will extend beyond physical expansion to include changes aimed at improving patient flow, capacity and staffing. The incoming nurses are expected to be central to easing pressure on frontline staff and improving emergency care.
Further consultations are planned in the coming weeks as authorities work toward a broader response to rising demand at the country’s main public hospital.

Hope these 120 have a COMPASSIONATE, PROFESSIONAL, CARING, POSITIVE attitude and work ethic unlike the majority of nurses currently working at the hospital
Which country these nurses coming from? Thought that woukd he very relevant to the disclosure. Just a few years ago Max Hurst was bragging about we will have do many nurses that they are planing to export to other country’s like the USA. What want wrong? Lies and more lies !
I need an African momma ooooooohhh. Hope my dreams can be fulfilled.
O
from where?
This announcement is way too vague from our out-of-kilter Health Minister Molwyn Joseph, especially after the recent loss of the Cuban medical practitioners.
Where are these 120 replacements coming from?
Do we have, as a good hearted nation the appropriate wherewithal to house all of them?
Furthermore, are they as qualified as the Cubans that were unceremoniously removed? Or is this just a number crunching political exercise?
I hope not!
I always take note of what these fancy-dan politicians tell us, however, it’s what they aren’t telling us that fascinates me even more so.
You can’t beat being a brilliant critical thinker.
