“(The Antigua Public Utilities Authority) is an artificial high-cost organization,” says one founding member of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), Bruce Goodwin.
“It is an engine for patronage and corruption,” continued Goodwin at the party’s forth launch of their general election candidates held, this time, at the Cedar Grove Primary School in the St. John’s Rural North constituency.
“It has been used, over the years, to generate jobs for people who do not work, who have no work to do.”
Goodwin outlined the high costs to the Antigua and Barbuda populous as a result of high fossil-fuel costs and that, “individuals and households and businesses will have to pay for that corruption… we have to pay for that patronage.”
“This is why we will never be able to easily afford electricity in our households and doing business will always be too expensive, because APUA is a fraud!”
Goodwin went on to outline that the DNA will, “abolish the use of fossil fuels.”
“If a government commits itself to renewable energy, to generating most or all of the energy required here by renewable means, principally by solar, by wind,” says Goodwin, “in five years, seventy-five percent of all energy needs here (in Antigua and Barbuda) can be provided by renewable energy.”
