DEAR KATE: Social media ruined my teenage love affair

Dear Kate,

I’ve fallen in love with a girl who is 14, I’m 16. I fell in love with her in September on Facebook and we decide to meet on Christmas Eve.

Sadly, her little brother came with us and he is annoying so to get rid of him I carried him to play an hour GTA game while I and his sister went boardwalk and get ice cream and we went to take pictures.

I put the picture we took on Christmas eve on my Facebook page and her big sister saw it and tell her dad.

Then her parents demand that we broke up. Ever since she came online two times and never reply. What should I do?

Confused

Dear Confused,

The “girl’s” parents are just trying to protect her. She’s 14 years old. But I understand how teenage love can be.

I’m pretty sure you will fall in love many times. Let me say this, if this girl is destined to be yours then she will eventually be.

But at 14 years don’t you think her focus should be elsewhere?

I’m not being insensitive but instead realistic. Leave her be for now. Maybe the friendship will bloom at a different age.

She needs to obey her parents since she’s a minor. At least “like” her enough to understand that.

Best,

Kate

14 & 16 ……THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH YOU FRESH OF BREADTMILK PIKNEY….AR YOU WANT TO MOVE SOOOOO FAST…. HER FATHER SHOYLD HAVE FLOGGED HER AZZ…..

14…..SHE SHOULDN’T BE EVEN ON ANY SOCIAL MEDIA ……whts the rush …enjoy being kidssss…..next ting u start petting n lead to forking….

You the 16 yr have a job….um sure ur still at the auspacy of ur parents ….jus a today why they insist on moving so fast

Get in ur books n study how you can be of use to urself …
Start understanding on how to provide for urself …
Show urself approved for any type of dating….

I blame SOCIETY who let children think they are ready to date at 14yrs …
Gyal I wudda bang u till my gut shrinks……

  2. KATE YOU NEED TO LET THE GUY KNOW AS WELL THAT HE IS UNDER AGE ABOUT FALLEN IN LOVE
THESE KIDS NO A DAYS NEED TO GO TO SCOOL AND THEIR LESSON AND STOP TALKING ABOUT
BOYFRIEND AND GIRLFRIEND AND THAT AGE, HER PARENT IS 100% RIGHT HIS PARENT’S NEED TO THE SAME FOR HIM NOT BECAUSE HE IS SIXTEEN HE STILL YOUNG. THAT WHY THE PERCENTAGE IN MATHS AND ENGLISH FOR CXC IS LOW IN ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA BECAUSE THESE KIDS ARE NOT FOCUSING ON THEIR WORK.

  3. Awwwww… But I’m sorry of it was my daughter I’d protect her from dating a boy at that age also. Focus on school girls they will come and go. We can’t control who we love but its for the best

  4. I am quite sure all you all that are talking had you all boyfriends and girlfriends at 14, I know I did. I think Kate’s respond was appropriate.

Now don’t get me wrong, they should not be in a relationship, but why get high and mighty when you know at their age you were doing the same thing and that is why we are in a better position to educate and guide them.

We need to talk to our children instead of beating or be littling them. Most times the negative approach drives them into the situation we are trying to get them away from.

    Just my 2 cents.

  5. When u try controlling young girls love life. That’s when they start sneak around. Hence they get pregnant. Because the only thing parents wanna do is stop and controlling who they should be friends with. The best thing is talk to your children. Y not let them bring their friends and meet the parents. And u can then guide ur children cause u know who they with.

  6. Harsh words and rash behaviour are a pretty good examples of what push some of the said teenagers to do some of the crap they do. At the same age many of u were doing the same and worse. Not saying they should be studying anything beside their books but with all the blows some ppl recieved they still found ways to do things they shouldnt. Find better ways to reason with the young ppl and show them examples.

    • Best statement thus far. Blows does nothing but instill fear and drive young people to lie and hide. Focusing on school is just one aspect of a teenagers live. They have peer-pressure, raging hormones, social media influence etc to contend with. The best thing a parent should do is allow the children to be themselves around them. Ideally at 14, you wouldnt want your child seeing the other sex, but realistically we are all human with innate anatomical developments that we cannot fully control (i.e. hormones and attraction for the opposite sex etc.).

  7. Some of u guys act like u the perfect parents u can’t control what no one loves they could be 14 or 100 they gonna love what they love. Guidance and good up bringing is key. Bout bang she some of y’all like to speak bad on people situations when y’all own running away. The age of consent is 16 so he is not underage. Yall annoying
